STD Info

STD stands for sexually transmitted disease. As the name suggests the sexually transmitted disease is spread through the sexual contact. The sexually transmitted diseases were also known as venereal diseases and initially included five diseases which were gonorrhea, syphilis, granuloma inguinale, lymphogranuloma venereum, and chancroid. However by the year 1960 there were more than 20 diseases that came under this fold. The more common of these happens to be AIDS, genital herpes, chlamydia, and human papillomavirus. Of these AIDS happens to be the deadliest.

The spread of AIDS happened to be more pronounced during the decade of 80's and it still happens to be on a rise. The worst part of this affliction is that there happens to be no cure and the person's health goes on a constant downward trail. The person's body becomes more prone to infections as the body loses its ability to fight off the infections.

The sexually transmitted diseases are usually caused due to the body fluids such as semen and vaginal fluids. Having safe sex safeguards the person against such infections to a great extent. Therefore it is advisable to exercise precaution such as wearing a condom. Also ensure that you exercise an extra bit of caution in case you happen to suffer from cuts or any abrasions as these diseases can be transmitted through blood also. Don't use any used needles. Even needle sharing during the intake of drugs are potential carriers of the deadly diseases such as AIDS. So it is advisable to stay away from these unsafe activities.

There are certain sexually transmitted diseases such as syphilis, which can be cured with the help of medication. At the same time unfortunately though there are diseases that can't be cured. The disease of genital herpes does not have any cure. This disease is caused by the herpes simplex viruses type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2). Although there are no symptoms as such of the disease, there are certain blisters that are formed around the genitals. The genital herpes also aids the spread of the HIV in the body, the virus that causes AIDS. The incidence of contracting AIDS increases manifold if one is suffering from any STD.

It is advisable not to get involved in an unsafe sexual act with prostitutes as having a large number of sexual partners puts them at the grave risk of contracting the sexually transmitted diseases.

The surest way out of all these sexually transmitted diseases is to be aware of your partner's status for all these diseases, whether they happen to be afflicted with any of these diseases and practicing safe sex.
